Friday November 1st 7-9pm
An interesting opening of the Strongpoint’s restored M19 fortress mortar and 6-loopholed heavy machine gun turret bunkers where you can explore the complex and spooky tunnel by your own torchlight in the dead of night!
Whether a believer or not, an interesting story (found at the top end of the tunnel stairs) related by a former soldier tells of a fatal fight between two soldiers in the tunnel that could perhaps, explain the stories and rumours of spooky goings on within the complex! Just ask some of the staff!
The bunkers are authentically restored to their original wartime condition and displays are based around information given by the soldiers who actually served there! There is also information on the forced labourers who constructed the site and interactions between the soldiers with nearby civilians as well as an escape attempt which ended in failure on the causeway to the lighthouse in September 1944. The sites give’s a ‘working atmosphere’ feel to the visitor and you are invited to touch and interact with some of the exhibits.
Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide you and give details of the fortifications and the actual soldiers who manned the complex and what they got up to along with an audio commentary explaining the original crew.
£6 admission, children under 16 & CIOS members free of charge.
DON’T FORGET YOUR TORCH!
